Top Green In-house Program
A number of environmental principles are applied daily at PG Hardwood Flooring, Model Hardwood and Beauceville Flooring, commensurate with corporate greening values supported by Top Green, the in-house program for sustainable forest management.
Priorities concerns include:
- Raw material origin
- Raw material yield
- Recycling
Raw Material Origin
The PG Group is committed to avoiding use of non-certified wood from controversial sources. Therefore, Model refrains from using the following wood:
- Wood harvested illegally;
- Genetically modified wood;
- Wood harvested from forests affected by persistent social conflict;
- Wood from highly protected non-certified sources;
Raw Material Yield
-
Raw material use is optimized through rigorous environmental control (heat and humidity) to avoid losses caused by boards splitting.
-
We produce five different board widths (2, 2 ¼, 2 ½, 3 ¼, 4 ¼ inches). Five widths offer the best combinations and the least waste.
-
Because boards arrive in random widths, we have developed an exclusive 2½-inch board to contribute to collective environmental preservation efforts. At PG alone, this accounts for savings of more than 6 500 trees per year. The addition of this new width has increased raw material yield by 7%.
The average yield of manufacturing companies in North America is 65%. Through important prevention and conservation measures applied to raw material, we have been able to obtain an average yield exceeding 75%. This means that for 10 million board feet of wood used, Model obtains 7.5 million board feet of finished products. This represents 1 million more board feet than the North American average. This extraordinary yield has a positive impact on the forest in the form of more than 16 500 trees.
Recycling
The company recycles 100 % of recyclable material in its plants and offices.
