Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)
The Forest Stewardship Council is an international, non-governmental, non-profit organization. It has developed Principles and Criteria of Forest Stewardship (FSC P&C) that form the basis for good forest management. The FSC can certify forests as properly managed in compliance with its P&C.
Strengths of the FSC Program
- An independent organization
- Constantly evolving and progressing with public inquiries
- Constantly improving the Chain of Custody
- The only standard publicly endorsed by GreenPeace and the WWF
- The toughest organization regarding sustainable forest management
- An organization not only protecting forests, but societies living in, or adjacent to, forests (principles and criteria)
- An organization that disproves genetically modified crops
- An organization that denounces illegal harvesting
Chain of Custody
PG Hardwood Flooring Inc. and Model Hardwood Inc. have been FSC members for their chains of custody since 2005. The principle underlying membership is to encourage sustainable forest management to preserve green capital.
A chain of custody certificate must accompany certified source wood from its point of origin in the forest to the end user. The chain of custody involves all stages of handling, from initial processing to manufacturing and distribution. In-house company coding procedures are applied to the wood upon arrival and through each stage of production until packaging.
Given our concern for forest harvesting practices, PG Group seeks to actively help most of our suppliers become FSC accredited. Suppliers must endorse sound forest management, consider environmental issues and social impacts and remain economically viable. Much of our supply of exotic species from Brazil and birch, maple, red oak and white oak originate from FSC suppliers with accredited chains of custody. This certification allows follow-up of certified source wood from its point of origin in the forest to the end user.
The consumer purchasing wood flooring with the FSC logo is assured that the forest of origin was managed in an environmentally friendly manner. By the same token, the consumer contributes to increased demand for this kind of product.
